Shared note
In the spring of 1798, Henry, who is stated as the son of Nathaniel in Everts Atlas of Miami County, Ohio - 1875, and several other families arrived at an area which was a part of Hamilton Co., but changed to Montgomery Co. in 1803, and redrawn into Miami Co. in 1807. It was there that the group established "Dutch Station" on the east side of the Miami River near the present site of Staunton. Henry entered land in Miami Co. Ohio 31 Dec 1802 and again in 1805. His parents settled on adjacent land in 1799. They and five other believers met on 3 Nov 1804 to constitute the Staunton Baptist Church. Henry was chosen as the Writing Clerk at the first business meeting on 1 Dec 1804. A large portion of what constitutes Miami Co. today was surveyed by Henry and as compensation for his services he received many acres of land. It is reputed that Henry built the first or one of the first two mills in Miami county for grinding and sawing. He also erected a grist and saw mill on the Miami River, one mile north of Troy in 1810. He served as County Commissioner for several years and an agent for Symmes in attending to lands. A Miami Co. History book states Henry had three wives and 22 children which cannot be proven. Seventeen children can be found in the census records but the names of all are not known. The 1820 census lists Henry aged 26 to 45 and wife, Martha, aged between 26 to 45 with eleven children: two males under 26, two under 16, three under 10 and one female under 26, one under 16, and two under 10. There was also an older male aged 45 and up living in their household it is quite likely that the elder male was Martha's father. After Martha died Henry married his 2nd wife in 1822 and the 1830 census lists Henry between 50 & 60, his wife between 40 & 50, with nine children at home, including the 4 youngest from the 1820 census plus two boys and three girls under ten years of age. Henry and his second wife moved to Elkhart Co. Indiana where they are found on the 1840 census and appear in the 50 to 60 age bracket with six children living in the household. In 1850 Henry is found back Miami Co. Ohio with no wife and living in the household of his daughter and husband, Susannah and Samuel H. McDowell. He could not be located on a census after that.
