Shared note
Abiah Carpenter, son of William Carpenter and Alice Briante, was born 4/2/1643 in Weymouth, MA, he married Mary Readawa y, daughter of our ancestors James Readaway and Mary Whipple, and the sister of Lydia (wife of Abiah‚Äôs sister Abigail ‚Äôs sonJohn Titus), Sarah (wife of Abiah‚Äôs brother Samuel, Samuel and Sarah are our ancestors), and Rebecca (wife o f Abiah’s brother William‚Äôs son John). Per Gene Zubrinsky, Abiah was said to be a mariner, but "the extent of his land holdings and the nature and frequency o f his public service point to his having been a yeoman". Abiah (grandson of this Abiah), who died in 1729, probably i n the WestIndies, was a mariner and captain; this may be what has caused the confusion. Abiah, son of William, settle d at Pawtuxet (Northern Warwick), RI between 1661 and 1663, and died there 1687 to 1689. Mary died young, and it woul d be reasonable for Abiah to have remarried, but no record is found of this. Abiah and Mary had two known children, Oli ver and Rebecca. Joseph born about 1678 may be another child. On 7/13/1663, Abiah Carpenter, Joseph Carpenter, Benjamin Smith and Mr. Henry Reddock all of "Pautuxett in Warwicke" as ked the Warwick Court of Trials to transfer their prosecution "concerning a Riot" to the General Court of Trials held a t Portsmouth thefollowing October. William Carpenter (William of Providence, father-in-law of Abiah‚Äôs sister Hannah ) and John Sweet (of Warwick) posted a bond of 100 pounds sterling ensuring their good behavior and appearance at the n ext court, wherethecharges were dropped.
