"The Swoope family of Huntingdon descended from PETER SWOOPE who was a son of JOHN JACOB SWOOPE of Hellam Twp., York Co ., Pa. Peter was bom April 1, 1763; died June 30, 1839. He was apprenticed to the hatting business, Aug. 17, 1773. H e afterwards removed to Hagerstown, Md. where he married July 5, 1784 ELIZABETH SNYDER, who was born Dec. 22, 1768; d . July 21, 1851. He subsequently settled in Huntingdon, where his children, 10 in number, were born. There he engage d in merchandising and the iron business, and accumulated a nice fortune. Feb. 13, 1807 All from ( c ) "Peter Swoope was a native of Germany and one of the early settlers of Huntingdon. Was a farmer and merchant. Had thr ee children." (d) "Then came a better mill with Peter and Henry2 Swoope as owners. They sold to the Hawn Brothers, and it was later tor n down."(e) "Peter Swoope, a hatter by trade came from Hagerstown and settled in Huntingdon before 1790. He also opened a store an d had two daughters who married DANIEL HUYETT of Md. and S.S. WHARTON of Huntingdon. Sons were JOHN3 SWOOPE who becam e an ironmaster ofBedford County. He, John, had two children, HENRY J.4 SWOOPE of Huntingdon and CATHARINE4 SWOOPE wh o m. May 10, 1827 JOHN SMITH. (f) PETER2 SWOOPE the hatter, owned 2 lots on Penn St., he later opened a store. He became active and influential and acqu ired a large estate, and at the time of his death about 1839 was considered the wealthiest citizen of Huntingdon. He o wned two keel boats and made regular trips." (g) “About 1818 JOHN SWOOPE3 conceived this locality, Hollidaysburg, a good one for the sale of goods. He came here from H untingdon, obtained possession of a small store building offering for sale a limited amount of merchandise." (h) "SAMUEL3 SWOOPE, the second son of PETER, lived at Martinsburg. Peter Swoope was a merchant." (i) Dr. WILLIAM3 SWOOPE, the youngest son, died in Porter Twp. JOHN N. SWOOPE buried Oct. 6, 1886. (k) It is not clear just who this John was.
