Shared note
Jonathan and Elizabeth were living in Washington Township of Montgomery Co. Ohio in the 1820 census. Deed records show that Jonathan and Elizabeth movedto Allen Co. Indiana where he purchased land in 1825 from his brother, Abner. It appears that Jonathan and his farmily were living in the same householdas Abner and his family in the 1830 census. They could not be found in the 1840 Census. On 23 May 1849, Jonathan and Elizabeth sold their land and the 1850 census shows Jonathan and children were in White County, Indiana. The names of the children were taken from that census. The census taker evidentlyomitted Elizabeth, Jonathan's wife, thinking he had listed her but only listed their eldest child, Elizabeth. Marriage records of Allen County had several Gerard girls and two, Sarah and Lydia, are thought to be children of this family, as the names of their husbands appear in the estate papers. The deaths of Jonathan and Elizabeth occurred sometime after the census was taken andbefore the sale of the personal property of Elizabeth, 25 Sept 1851. The estate papers of Jonathan show that the widow took her share of property beforethe sale of Jonathan's property. Franklin J. Herman was assigned the administrator af both and he presented his accounts to the court in 1853 and 1854.Mr. Herman was also assigned guardian to the infant (not of majority age) children of Jonathan: David, William, Catherine and Samantha. In 1856 David'saccount was sent by mail and 28 Aug 1860 the accounts for David, William andCatherine were paid in full. Samantha remained the only ward and was livingin Ohio at that time. L.W. (Lewis) Gerard bought several items at the personal property sale of Elizabeth and their daughter, Lavina, pad $2.50 for the Bible. An Abner Gerard died in Whie County, Indiana in 1850 of lung disease. He was 20 years old and was born in Montgomery Co, Ohio. It is thought he might be a child of Jonathan and Elizabeth. From the Gerard book pg 45, by Boband Carolyn Gerard.
