Deacon William Carpenter, son of William Carpenter and Abigail Briante, was born about 1631 in Shalbourne, England, whe re he was baptized on November 22, 1631. He died January 26, 1702/3 in Rehoboth, MA. William married (1) Priscilla Benn ett on October 5,1651 in Rehoboth. Priscilla was the daughter of Edward Bennett, she was born about 1631, and died in c hildbirth on October 20, 1663 in Rehoboth. William married (2) Meriam Saile, on December 10, 1663 in Rehoboth, she die d May 01, 1722 inRehoboth. William was a farmer by trade; he became one of the most important men of the town. He served as town clerk from 5/13/1 668 until his death, except for one year-1693. He was Deputy to the General Court in 1656 and 1658, and became Deacon o f the church in 1668. He also served on the committee to sell the Rehoboth meetinghouse in 1683. His home was located o n the left side of the road leading from the E. Providence meetinghouse to Rehoboth. He is buried in Rehoboth. Deacon William Carpenter and his first wife Priscilla Bennett had: John, b. 10/19/652, m. Rebecca Readaway (sister of S arah and Lydia); William, b. 6/20/1659; Priscilla, b. 7/24/1661; Benjamin, b. 10/20/1663. A child Jedediah born about 1 655 appears in some family histories, I did not find a record of this birth. Deacon William Carpenter and his 2nd wife Meriam Saile had: Josiah, b. 12/18/1664; Nathaniel, b. 5/12/1667; Daniel (als o called Samuel it would appear), b. 10/8/1669, m. (2) Elizabeth Butterworth (great-granddaughter of our ancestor Henr y Butterworth); Noah, b. 3/28/1672; Miriam, b. 10/24/1674; Obadiah, b. 3/12/1678; Ephraim, b. 4/25/1683, m. (2) Marth a Ide, widow of Zachariah Carpenter (son of his father’s brother Samuel); Hannah, b. 4/18/1684; Abigail, b. 4/15/1687 .
