Shared note
They moved to Guilford, VT in 1780. MILITARY: Military: It appears he enlisted as a resident of Guilford, Vt., as private, in Captain Draper's company, Col . Gardner's regiment; served 8 months in 1775. Nathaniel of the Grants, Cumberland Co., Guilford, Vt. enlisted into the independent corps of rangers under the comman d of Major Whitcomb, July 4, 1779. Nathaniel of Guilford went to Westmoreland, Feb. 17, 1777, during the war served to Dec. 31, 1779; was paid ÔøΩ68 and 1 6s. Amos B. Carpenter, Carpenters of Rehoboth, 1898, pg 142 Nathaniel and Elizabeth are both buried in South Cemetery, Leyden, but their graves are very hard to read now. Nathaniel was a farmer by trade. In 1770, he moved to Guilford, VT, which is just north of Leyden. There was a large Ca rpenter farm and homestead there that many of the Franklin Co, MA Carpenters worked. Nathaniel served 8 months in the Revolutionary War in 1775. A resident of Guilford, VT; he was a Private in Captain Dra per's Co., Col. Gardiner's Regiment. He is also believed to be the same Nathaniel Carpenter‚ of the Grants, Cumberlan d Co., Guilford, Vt.‚ who enlisted in the independent corps of Rangers, under the command of Major Whitcomb, July 4, 17 79; and the same Nathaniel Carpenter of Guilford, who went to Westmoreland, 2/17/1777, and served until 12/31/1779. A s these records rarely give more thana name and town of residence, it is often impossible to be sure one has the righ t ‚Nathaniel Carpenter‚. His pension records are very hard to read, but seem to recognize an 8-month service, and the n additional service for a year or two.
