My family tree

The 1860 Census shows Lewis and Elizabeth living in Allen County, Indiana, New Haven Twp., and he worked as a carpenter. Living with the family is Elizabeth's younger sibling, Francis Penland, age 18. Lewis enlisted in the 38th Wisconsin Infantry on March 19, 1864. His rank was a private and he was in Company B. This regiment was organized at Camp Randall, in Madison, Wisconsinin March of 1864. They were sent to Virginia and in June were transferred tothe Army of the Potomac and took position in the extreme front before the Battle of Petersburg Virginia on June 16. Lewis was wounded on 17 June, 1864,lost his left hand and part of his left arm. He received a disability discharge on 22 December 1864. The 1870 Census shows the family living in DeKalb Co,Indiana, Newville Twp. Lewis's occupation is a laborer, and William H. works on the farm. Samuel is at school. The 1880 Census shows the family livingin Montcalm County Michigan, Reynolds Twp and his occupation is a farmer. In1890, due to Lewis's poor health, the family moved to Portland, Oregon. In1891 they settled in Corvallis, where he died on Aug 27, 1891. In 1892, Elizabeth Gerard petitioned the government for a widow's pension for Lewis. At that time she was living in Corvallis, Benton Co. Oregon.
